Why Was ACAP Issued?

Annapurna Conservation Area is the first and the largest protected area of Nepal covering 7629 square kilometers giving shelter to the thousands of flora and fauna. This conservation area is situated in the Annapurna range of the Himalayas that extends in elevation from 790 m to 8091 m. It was established in 1985 and gazetted in 1992 with the aim of creating sustainable economic and social development to raise the standard of the locals and conserve the natural beauty of the region.

Since this conservation area contains many Himalayan trekking routes, a large number of trekkers and visitors come to this region every year which has become a threat to wildlife, vegetation, the natural environment, and the traditional local cultures. Especially the management of the tons of garbage produced by the visitors is a challenging task.

Thus, it is essential to collect a particular amount from its visitors just to preserve the natural environment, local traditional cultures, to raise the socio-economic standard of the locals, and finally to keep this region pollution-free. It is managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation.
