Key Requirements & Permits

Before embarking on your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from the USA, you will need to obtain certain permits to enter the region. Since Tibet is part of the Autonomous Region of China, the rules are strict and require proper documentation for the Yatra.

The major permits that are required for Kailash Yatra for USA citizens are as follows:

1. Valid Passport

The trekkers must have a 6-month valid passport to obtain a visa for their Kailash Journey. Additionally, the passport must have two blank pages for visas and permits. Do not forget to get several photocopies of the passport.

2. Nepal Tourist Visa

To participate in the Kailash Yatra, entry must be made via Nepal, which requires a Nepal Tourist Visa for US Citizens. Direct entry to Tibet is not permittable for US citizens, so they must travel through Nepal.

You can obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

Visa fee (as of 2025):

  • 15 days: USD 30
  • 30 days: USD 50
  • 90 days: USD 125

Please carry one passport-sized photo and a copy of a passport.

A Multiple-Entry Visa is recommended because you’ll exit Nepal to Tibet and re-enter after the yatra.

3. Chinese Group Visa

US citizens also require a Chinese Group Visa for the Kailash Yatra. This visa is issued by the Chinese government to allow entry into Tibet, specifically for the purpose of pilgrimage.

You cannot apply for the group visa independently. Application must be through a registered travel agency in Nepal.

After arriving in Kathmandu, you will need 1-2 extra days to obtain the Chinese Group Visa for the Yatra.

The Tibet Travel Permit is also organized by the tour operator itself. The permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau.

Same documents are necessary for the Chinese Group Visa. Since this permit is checked at various points, always carry it throughout your journey.

5. Alien’s Travel Permit

Alien’s Travel Permit is a special type of permit that is issued by the Public Security Bureau in Tibet.

A permit is required to enter the restricted areas and areas beyond Lhasa. The permit can only be applied for via a travel operator.

It is issued after you enter Lhasa and helps you to explore the Kailash region legally.

6. Military and Border Area Permit

The Military and Border Area permit is issued by the Military and Foreign Affairs Department in Tibet.

Because the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra lies close to the borders of Nepal, India, and China, this permit ensures security clearance at these boundaries.

The permit is arranged by the company itself, and individual travel is not allowed; only group travel is allowed. This can be applied in conjunction with other permits as well.

7. Medical Clearance / Health Certificate

Although medical clearance is not compulsory for all trekkers, it is necessary for participants over age 70 to obtain permits.

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra takes you to the highest altitude of 5,650 meters, where the air is thinner and makes it difficult to breathe.

To ensure your safety, you will need to bring a medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner in the US before your arrival in Nepal.

Altitude sickness is common for those with asthma, lung, or heart issues. Take health precautions before preparing for your Kailash Yatra.

Kathmandu lies on the Nepal-Tibet border, or you can fly directly to Lhasa. The road trip is scenic, offering a view of the Himalayas and rural areas, whereas the flight alternative is time-saving.

After heading to Tibet, the trip proceeds to Mansarovar Lake, where pilgrims conduct religious rituals and sacred dips. The pilgrimage then proceeds to Mount Kailash, where the sacred Parikrama (circumambulation) is performed; the pilgrim must walk through high-altitude terrain and mountain passes.

Tour operators in Nepal arranges these pilgrimages, making the process simple and well-coordinated for USA travelers.

Via Mainland China

Another option is via Mainland China. Passengers can fly from the USA to large Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Chengdu, or Guangzhou, and then travel to Lhasa via domestic flight or train.

This route is usually more complex than the Nepal route. Tourists must first acquire a standard Chinese visa, then obtain a special Tibet travel permit through authorized Chinese travel agencies.
