The Kailash Parbat Yatra brings pilgrims from all over the world. Meanwhile, before starting the Yatra, one must get the required permits for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Since the Kailash Parbat is located in the remote and restricted areas of Tibet, solo entry and travel are also banned for security reasons.

The first process for the Kailash Yatra Journey from Nepal is to arrive early, at least 2-3 days before the start of the itinerary for the yatra. Submit the required documents in advance so that you do not need to worry about the documentation.

Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)

The Tibet Travel Permit or Tibet Entry Permit is the primary document that any foreigner needs to enter Tibet. You will not even board a train or a flight to Tibet without this permit. It is published by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB).

This permit cannot be applied for individually. It can only be applied on your behalf by a licensed local travel agency.

To apply, you must submit a scanned copy of your travel agency, passport, and Chinese visa (in case you are entering mainland China).

Instead, a Chinese Group Visa will be required if you are coming from Nepal. The travel agency will also request your tour itinerary, dates of your travel, and, in some cases, a passport-size photograph.

It always takes approximately 8-9 working days to process the Tibet Travel Permit, and it is always advisable to apply at least 15-20 days before; in case you are going to restricted places such as Mt. Kailash or Ngari.

The permit costs commonly CNY 300-500, which is commonly part of your Kailash Tibet tour package.

Alien’s Travel Permit (ATP)

The Alien’s Travel Permit (ATP) is what a traveler needs in case he or she intends to visit other parts of Tibet that are either restricted or not announced.

This permit is needed in such places as Shigatse, Gyantse, Everest Base Camp, and certain areas of Ngari and Nyingchi. It is issued by the Public Security Bureau (PSB) in Tibet.

To receive this permit, you will be requested to bring your original passport, a copy of your Tibet Travel Permit, and your itinerary that will display the restricted areas that you intend to visit. The whole of this will be taken care of by your tour guide/travel agent once you are in Lhasa.

Travel Permit of the Alien is issued in a very short time. Normal working conditions would take 1-2 working days.

During high seasons, it might take a little longer. This permit costs approximately 50 CNY per individual, and most of the authorities are included in your total tour package.

Military Permit and Foreign Affairs Permit

You also must get a Military Permit, and occasionally a Foreign Affairs Permit, should you be traveling to border or other sensitive areas of Tibet like Ngari (Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar), parts of Nyingchi, Chamdo, or other remote areas.

The need for such documents is due to the fact that these areas are the ones that are close to the foreign borders and are under military control.

These are permits of the Military Affairs Office and the Foreign Affairs Office in Tibet. The travel agency will make an application along with your other documents.

You are to present a copy of your passport, Chinese visa or Group Visa, Tibet Travel Permit, and your itinerary of the trip.

The Military Permit has the longest processing time compared to the other permits. It normally takes between 10 and 15 working days, and in certain regions, it can take a month.

It is approximately 100 CNY per individual, though most agencies are adding this to the overall tour cost.

Group Visa at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu

When you are traveling to Tibet over Nepal, you must take out a Chinese Group Visa at the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu.

This visa is needed, although you already have a Chinese visa, because your personal visa will cease to exist as soon as the group visa is issued. This could only be done through your Nepal-based travel agency.

To obtain the Group Visa, you will require the original passport (not older than 6 months), a passport-size photograph, a visa application form, and an invitation letter from the Tibet Tourism Bureau, which will be submitted by your agency.

The visa application is also done in a group of all the members within the same group, and the visa will be on one sheet of paper with the names of all the members.

The Group Visa takes an average of 4 working days to be processed, and urgent processing may also be done in 3 days at an additional fee. Group Visa is priced depending on nationality.

Kailash Yatra for U.S citizens, it costs approximately USD 140, whereas for the majority of other nationalities, it costs USD 80-100. The agency can also impose a service fee of about USD 20 per individual to process the activity.

Timeframes for All Permits

Travelers are required to submit a scanned copy of their passports at the travel agency at least 25-30 days prior to travel to facilitate easy processing.

All paperwork in the form of Tibet Travel Permit, Alien Permit, and Military Permit will be done ahead of time by the agency.

The procedure for a group visa starts once you arrive in Kathmandu, and your original passport will be taken.

Insurance and Medical Certificate

It is obligatory that all Kailash Mansarovar Yatri have travel insurance. Emergency evacuation, medical treatment, and trip cancellation should also be covered in your insurance.
