Poon Hill is a go-to spot for the best views of sunrise and sunsets. Every trekker going to the Annapurna region, mainly to the Ghorepani trek, never misses this one.

One can get a 270° Himalayan view of the massive Annapurna range, including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhare.

What Makes Poon Hill Sunrise Special?

The sunrise from Poon Hill is a special experience, as it gradually awakens the whole Himalayan range.

The golden ray enters the mighty first rays to reach Annapurna South and Machhapuchhare. It turns the hilltop colours into a golden and pink hue. The mountains appear peaceful and silent, but strong, as though they have just been waking up with the day.

Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri start to shine, and it is high and bright against the early morning sky.

Many locals and trekkers offer soft prayers or just grin, which makes the experience personal and meaningful to many.

It is not only about the sight, but it is about the experience of being there in nature as pure and serene as it can be.

Poon Hill Sunset

Sunset in Poon Hill is a lot more peaceful and quiet experience than the rush sunrise time. Since most of the trekkers are preoccupied with mornings.

The scenery is more serene during the evening, where you can appreciate the surroundings calmly without intimidating anyone with noise.

There is a painting of the sky in a smooth, soft carat of orange, which slowly changes into deep purple before settling into a blue hour.

The mountains cast a soft shadow, producing a beauty that is so peaceful and thought-provoking, rather than dramatic.

If you plan to spend two days in Ghorepani, sunset is the best time to visit Poon Hill. You need not rush up, see the colours change, and then come back before it is too late. This also relieves him of the burden of getting up early the following morning.

Sunset at Poon Hill is perfect when one needs to spend a few minutes in a calm setting with clear views and has time to really feel the Himalayan scenery at a slower, more relaxed pace.

Complete View Tower Breakdown: What You Can See from Poon Hill

The scenery is different in every direction from the Poon Hill view tower, and each side presents a different experience. That is why the viewpoint is complete and well-balanced.

When you look to the north, you see the centre of the Annapurna range. The side has clear views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and the holy Machhapuchre. They are close and sharp peaks and beautiful, particularly before daybreak when the snow is shimmering with soothing tones.

When you look towards the north-west and west, the landscape opens up to the huge Dhauligiri range. This section is dominated by Dhauligari I, Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak and Gurja Himal. These mountains are broader and steeper, with deep valleys carved by rivers and glaciers.

Then, when the weather is very clear, as you face the east, you may have a view of Manaslu in the distance.

Looking south, the habitat changes to green hills and valleys formed of layers of it. Small villages, terraced fields, and forests are traditionally covered in a fatigue of mist, or in the evening, radiating in golden light.

Small Peaks, Hill Layers & Landmarks

The Poon Hill view tower offers one of the most rewarding panoramic views of the Annapurna region’s mountains.

On bright days, the horizon is opened out upon a long line of snow-capped mountains that rise tall, each with its own character and form, and with its own beauty.

The western skyline is dominated by Dhaulagiri at 8,167 metres, with its massive and strong appearance. Neighbouring it closely, there is Annapurna I, whose presence is spectacular and overwhelming.

The South and Hiunchuli are beautifully placed around the area and look very graceful in their balance in these sharp ridges and stretches of smooth, snowy spans.

Fishtail, which is also referred to as Machhapuchhare, is one of the most striking peaks that can be seen at Poon Hill. Farther down the range, there is a noticeable shimmer of Nilgiri and Tukuche Peak, giving the picture depth and proportion.

When there is a very clear morning, it is also possible to see Gurja Himal and Baraha Shikhar in the distance at sunrise. Manaslu, at a distance, might be even hard to see, on a very clear day, to remind you that the range of the Himalayas is indeed very great.

Best Season to Visit Poon Hill for Sunrise & Sunset Views

Poon Hill’s sunrise and sunset vary by season, each bringing a different feel and experience. By choosing the right season, you can get better views, greater light, and a more comfortable walk to the viewpoint.

Spring (March through May) is a great time to visit Poon Hill. The skies are generally clear, and the mountains present sharp contrasts in the morning light. Rhododendron forests are in full bloom along the way, which adds to the beauty of the hike. At sunrise and at sunset, the colours are very vibrant.

In the autumn (September to November), it is also a great time. Post monsoon, the air is clean and dry, which in turn gives you great mountain visibility. Sunrises are bright and crisp, and sunsets are calm and golden. This is the season for great photography and clear panoramic views.

Winter (Dec to Feb) is a great time for quiet trails and lighter foot traffic. The mountains look very clean on some days, but mornings can be very cold. At times, the snow will cover the trail and viewpoints, which makes for a beautiful but also a very early wake-up. We recommend going out at sunset as opposed to sunrise during the winter.

Monsoon (June to August) is the wettest and therefore the least popular time to visit. We see a great deal of cloud, which in turn makes the mountain views hard to come by; also, currently, the trails are very slippery. But if you do have the chance to visit at that time and the weather plays along, you will see beautiful sunsets over the hills.

Best time for Sunrise and Sunset at Poon Hill

The best time is at 4:00 AM in the summer and at 5:00 AM in the winter. But for the sunset the best time is 5:00 PM in winter and 6:00 in Summer.

From Ghorepani to Poon Hill, you may expect to take 45 minutes to an hour. Most people begin their trek at 1 to 1.5 hours pre-sunset, which is the best time to arrive at the top without having to rush in the dark.

It’s best to arrive at the view tower early. That gives you time to find a great spot, set up your camera, and enjoy the colour change at a more leisurely pace. In busy seasons, the towers can be very crowded, so early arrival is key to getting a clear spot.

At dawn’s break, the best colours appear. Pink and orange hues slowly spread over the mountains at this time. By arriving 20-30 minutes before the break of day, you can see this natural shift and fully enjoy the sunrise, not just the sun’s first appearance.

Trail Guide: Ghorepani to Poon Hill Sunrise Hike

From Ghorepani to Poon Hill, the hike is of short duration but very much worth it for the spectacular sunrise over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

The trail is of a distance of 1.5 km and an elevation gain of about 340 meters. Mostly, the path is of stone steps and has a moderate grade, which is doable for the average trekker. The steps at times are not even, which is why care is important, particularly in the dark.

If you plan to set out before the sun rises, then a headlamp will be necessary for you. In the morning, you may feel cold, so, layer up in clothes as a defence against the wind. The stone steps will at times be slippery from dew and frost; wear shoes that have a great grip.

The trail is for the average trekker who has moderate fitness. We do recommend it for families with kids or seniors, as long as they take breaks and go at a steady pace. It is short but very steep, so we advise you to pace yourself and bring water.
