Kathmandu to Syabrubesi: Travel Options and Road

Thinking of the Langtang Valley Trek? The Langtang Trek starting point is called Syabrubesi. The trip starts with a road trip from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. It is a small town that is the primary base point for every trekker until Langtang National Park.

It is possible to get to Syabrubesi in Kathmandu by many means. Either by public buses, by shared jeeps, or by individual jeeps. The ride is an adventure itself as it presents views of rivers, mountains, and hills.

However, there are trekkers who begin in another town called Dhunche on the route. Syabrubesi is preferable as it saves time on trekking and is closer to the trailhead.

Here, we will explain it all on the Kathmandu-Syabrubesi road trip: distance, travelling time, bus or jeep, road conditions, expenses, and travel suggestions, all in accordance with the actual experience of the trek.

Where is Syabrubesi?

Syabrubesi is a small Nepalese mountain town in the Rasuwa District. It is located in Langtang National Park, which is a major trekking destination. The village is the primary starting point of the trekkers towards the Langtang Valley Trek, the Tamang Heritage Trail, and Gosaikunda Lake Trek.

Syabrubesi is located approximately 122 km (76.8 mi) north of Kathmandu by road. It has an approximate elevation of 1,503 m /4,931 ft., which is the perfect point to start trekking.

The town is also close to the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung (Gyirong Port). Hence, it is used as a major transit point for both travellers and traders. Due to its location, the Syabrubesi has a basic mid-range hotel, lodges, trekking shops, and permit checkpoints into Langtang National Park.

Sometimes, Dhunche is also a starting point on the same path. The trail starts in Syabrubesi as it heads into the Langtang Valley and makes its way into Kyanjin Gompa.

The trekkers from Pokhara or the central and western side also prefer to travel via Pokhara to Syabrubesi and start the trek. The distance between Pokhara to Syabrubesi is 236 km (146 miles). It takes around 8-9 hours.

Syabrubesi to Kathmandu Distance and Travel Time

The road distance from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu covers about 122 km (76.8 mi). The distance is not very far. It has winding mountain roads, river valleys, and hundreds of waterfalls all along the way. 

The speed of travel is seasonal and depends on the type of vehicle. During the dry season, it takes most 7-9 hrs by public bus, and 9-12 hours or more during the monsoon, due to muddy roads and landslides.

The shared ones or private are quicker and more comfortable reaching Syabrubesi in 5-7 hrs with good roads. Jeeps can take as much as 7-9 hours in the rainy season, which depends on the status of the road and the traffic.

Syabrubesi-Betrawati Route

Another route that takes less time, avoiding Kalikasthan and Dhunche, passes through Betrawati to 12 Ghumti. It is unpaved and rugged road, and there is one checkpoint on the way.

This route is normally picked up by local jeeps or skilled drivers. During the monsoon, it may not be safe because of mud and landslides, and hence it is advised to check the road before using this route.

Although there is a long-distance trip, the road along the path is scenic with the views of the Trishuli River, terraced hills, and small villages, to make the journey a memorable one as the start of the Langtang Valley Trek.

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi Road Condition

The Kathmandu to Syabrubesi road condition is both paved and unpaved, so the trip will be an adventure. Betrawati, Trishuli, and Kathmandu have largely paved roads and are in good condition, so that buses and jeeps travel without any trouble.

After we cross Betrawati, the road narrows and gets rougher, particularly towards Dhunche. This has sections that are either unpaved, dusty, or muddy, based on the season.

The road beyond Dhunche to Syabrubesi is still harder, and some of it has been recently repaired; the rest is still hard or gravelly.

The landslides may damage sections of the road, especially during the monsoon season. Dry season provides a smoother ride, and the road in some hilly places is still bumpy.

There are some portions of the road that are under regular maintenance by local authorities, though in certain areas, maintenance is random.

Cars that have good suspension, like jeeps, give them an easier role of going through the journey, and a bus will feel like an engine dragging along on rocky surfaces.

Despite these hurdles, the road is very scenic, and there are rivers, forests, and mountains found on the path, and the road becomes a significant part of the Langtang trekking experience.

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi Route Highlights

The Kathmandu to Syabrubesi road is not just part of the drive; it is an experience. In all the boundaries of the roads, the natural beauty and local culture of Nepal are displayed.

Kathmandu → Trishuli

The drive starts from Kathmandu to the Trishuli River, and passes through the green valleys and villages bordering the river via Nuwakot.

The highway in this area is mostly tarmac, and we can see residents attending fields, and children waving as the jeep rides by. The river scenery is mesmerizing, and during spring, the riverside is filled with wildflowers.

Trishuli → Betrawati

Betrawati is on the border of Nuwakot and Rasuwa District. It is a junction of rivers and at first sight of mountains. There is a bridge that we cross to get to Rasuwa. There are many local shops that offer snacks, tea, and handcrafted goods.

The place is covered with ancient temples and charming houses, thus creating a relaxing pause before the hike up.

Betrawati → Dhunche

The highway passes through thick rhododendron forests, which are bright in the spring.  There are small villages that cling to the sloping hills, and residents stroll along the terraced fields.

There are many waterfalls on the route, which add some refreshing elements to the ride. The atmosphere around Dhunche becomes a little bit colder. The peaks around it become bigger, preparing the reader for the adventure that is about to be introduced in Langtang.

Dhunche → Syabrubesi

The last part leads further up into the hills, along small roads with spots of roughness. Right after we leave Dhunche, we see a Red Panda Park and the Rasuwa Drinking Water Factory on the way. Dhunche to Syabrubesi distance is around 19.2 km (11.9 miles).

There is a thickening of forests, and we move through small villages where villagers serve us warm tea and snacks during the breaks.

We see views of the Langtang mountain range, and streams of melting snow create hundreds of waterfalls.

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi Transportation

Syabrubesi can be reached from Kathmandu via a variety of paths at varying levels of comfort, speed, and flexibility. Select, depending on your spending capacity, the number of people in the group, and the type of travel. If you arrive at Kathmandu early then you can get the tickets for Syabrubesi the same day also. Bus and jeeps leave Kathmandu till 12 AM. So you can get tickets for the same day you want to trek too.

Public Bus (Budget Option)

The cheapest mode of transport to Syabrubesi from Kathmandu is by public transport. They leave via Kathmandu to Syabrubesi bus counter, which is generally early in the morning at 6-7 AM, and operate up to mid-morning. The tickets are affordable at about NPR 1000-1200 per person, hence suitable for the backpacker or the solo traveler.

The journey may also be bumpy and lengthy, particularly past Dhunche; however, it gives an opportunity to watch local life, meet other travelers, and have an opportunity to look at the river and the villages through the windows.

The bus is always on time and cannot make many stops, and therefore they might not be as spacious and accommodating.

Shared Jeep (Comfortable and Faster)

Small groups prefer to use a shared jeep. They tend to leave places such as Machhapokhari, Balaju, or even from the Buspark itself.

Four-wheel drives have more suspension than buses, and this has facilitated the rough roads that follow Dhunche.

They are quicker and can take 5-7 hours in normal seasons, and have the time to go and make a photo stop or grab some snacks on the way.

Sharing Jeeps will be ideal when you have a small group of friends on a trek, and you are not keen on having a full vehicle of your own, but instead, you need the comfort and freedom of a Jeep.

The prices are typically NPR 1200-NPR 1400 per person in a jeep, shared with the passengers.

Private Jeep (Most Comfortable Choice)

The best comfort and convenience are provided by the private Jeeps, which are mostly suitable for families, luxury trekkers, or photographers who require the ability to make stops at any place they prefer.

A personal jeep can be hired with Himalayan Masters, and it accommodates 5-7, but it will cost approximately $100, and sometimes may come with price variations.

Jeeps are also the best way to travel during the dry season and can, at times, go as far as Sherpagaon, thus lessening the time spent walking.

The ride is much faster, smoother, and safer, making it an ideal choice for a person who does not want to be among the crowds or take as much luggage.

If you book the Langtang Valley trek via private jeep then you will get a pickup at you hotel itself, a door-to-door service. You will have a hassle free journey.

Electric Vehicles (Eco-Friendly)

In recent years, small electric vehicles (EVs) have started to run along this route, but only at shorter distances around Kathmandu or for mass Langtang Valley Trek land transportation.

EVs are quiet and attractive to nature; however, their range is restricted to allow the trip to Kathmandu-Syabrubesi.

They are perfect for day trips, short journeys, or eco-conscious travelers visiting the surrounding towns, but jeeps and buses are the surest way of getting to Syabrubesi.

But one problem with EV is they make 1-2 hours in between for charging, and the people with motion sickness should avoid using EV as a ride for Syabrubesi.

Common Problems & How to Avoid Them

The Kathmandu to Syabrubesi is a stunning drive, though there are several obstacles that travelers ought to consider. It is better to know them prior to the journey, that is, to make it easier and safer.

1. Rough and Unpaved Roads

The road is narrower and less well-maintained after Dhunche. It has graveled areas, potholes, and misaligned areas. These parts may become muddy in the course of the monsoon or greasy. The ride can be made more comfortable when one opts to take a jeep with a good suspension or a personal vehicle.

2. Landslides and Roadblocks

During the monsoon season (June -September), there is a tendency for landslides and roads to become blocked. The jeeps/cars might need to spend several hours before crews blow the clearance. The best thing to do is to check road conditions the previous night and arrive early in the morning to avoid experiencing delays.

3. Limited Mobile Network

There may be congestion in public buses and shared jeeps, particularly on weekends or during the trekking season. It is possible not to suffer uneasily by booking in advance or renting a personal jeep.

Driving can be slowed down and made more difficult in case of fog, rain, or snow. The weather forecast should never be ignored; warm clothes should always be carried. One should be ready to have an unexpected change in temperature.

6. Permit and Bag Checks

Syabrubesi falls within Langtang National Park, and therefore, at times, authorities check trekking permits and bags. Telling the truth and working in a collaborative manner is beneficial in avoiding delays.

Local Advice about Travel

Here are some of the few pieces of advice from the locals and guides that will help you have a better journey:

• Depart early in the morning to have a smooth ride.
• Sit to the left and have views of the rivers.
• Do not litter when in the car.
• When inspected, do not lie about permits and bags.
• Never violate locals and their property.
• Take offline maps with you out of Kathmandu.
• The mobile network has weak coverage in some areas.
• Check the weather conditions prior to going on the trip.
• Have some cash in tea stops and shops.
• When walking, wear comfortable shoes to walk a short distance on the route.
• Be ready for changes in temperature.

Kathmandu to Sherpagaon, An Alternative Route

Sherpagaon is also a great place to drive off all the way to the trekkers who want to shorten the Langtang Valley trek.

This route can be used by people who want an easier way to travel.

Route Overview

The way begins in Kathmandu, and then follows Trishuli, Betrawati, and Dhunche over to Syabrubesi. Then we take the route that goes up to Khanjim village, then up to Sherpagaon.

At that point, the road goes to Sherpagaon, which is the last drive point on this road before the footpath starts. It is the stretch that is primarily narrow and unpaved, yet it offers some breathtaking views of the Langtang landscape.

Travel Time

The journey to Kathmandu Valley to Syabrubesi via jeep takes about 5-7 hours. The road leading from Syabrubesi to Sherpagaon provides an extra time that lasts about 2 hours more, depending on the condition of the road and weather. So it is total 9 hours of journey from Kathmandu to Sherpagaon.

When we get to Sherpagaon, it is only a 40-minute walk on foot to join the main trail to the Langtang Valley. The complete road network that connects Kathmandu and Sherpagaon is approximately 140 km.

Road & Vehicle Conditions

The road is largely off-road and rough with loose gravel, mud spots, and bumps. Powerful vehicles like 4×4 jeeps or personal jeeps can cross the route without any problem because they have strong suspension.

But electric vehicles can go shorter distances. Driving along this stretch needs a lot of care, yet it is rewarding as one gets a chance to wind through forests, streams, and little rivers.

Roadside and Scenic Overview

On our way, we go through Khanjim village, which is a quite big village and right by the trekking path. There are cattle grazing on the hillsides, and we often see prairie wheels and modern farming use.

The way is lined with streams, little waterfalls, and rhododendron trees, which give us a preview of the landscapes that we would see on the trek. The road is a scenic paradise, and you get mountain and forest views at nearly every corner.

Trek from Sherpagaon

At Sherpagaon, the road leading to the main one would take around 40 minutes and pass through forested areas and through the valley of rivers. This brief excursion throws us at once into the charms of Langtang, rhododendrons, streams, and terraces, as seen on the excursion.
