Chitwan National Park Tour

Nepal is famous for its majestic mountains, but it also holds great prosperity to grow as a bio-hub spot. The geography of Nepal stretches from 80 to 8848.86 meters above sea level, with a wide range of ecosystems. These ecosystems nourish a great species of flora and fauna, contributing to the development of tourism.

Chitwan National Park is a savanna for several birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and many more species. Further, the Park is home to several research and conservation areas for various rare species.

Additionally, apart from wildlife, the park is equally famous for conservation and cultivating numerous plant species, from herbs to ginormous trees.

Initially, the goal of this national park was to conserve the One-horned Rhino, a very rare mammal breed in Terai of Nepal. They also worked on conversations of Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and valuable species of deer that can be seen during the Chitwan Jungle Safari tour.

There are several safari options to enjoy all these rich biodiversities. You can go on a jungle, jeep, canoe, or elephant safari. Each safari option offers a look into the wildlife and vegetation of the park.

Overview

Chitwan National Park is among Nepal’s well-preserved wildlife and is located in the southwestern part of Chitwan District. The Park was established as the Royal Chitwan National Park in 1973 and enlisted as a World Heritage Site in 1984.

The elevation of Chitwan National Park Nepal ranges between 110 meters (361 feet) and 850 meters (2789 feet) above sea level.

Among all the natural touristic spots, the park is a famous destination for numerous nature enthusiasts. This small landmark has over 10% of the world’s bird species (867 birds) and 651 butterfly species.

On top of that, there are 208 mammas,123 reptiles, and 55 amphibians around the Nation. The pristine mountain lakes and cascading rivers are home to 230 freshwater fish. Also, the number of floras in the tropical, temperate, and alpine landscapes is unbelievable.

Apart from exploration of plants and animals, there are lots of other activities a tourist can do. Whether you want to have a relaxing holiday with your family, have a cultural experience, or plan to do some research in Nepal, this Chitwan Jungle Safari is our best recommendation.

Due to the abundance of tourists, the national park has been polluted. However, several efforts have been made to manage plastic waste by banning the use of single-use plastics. Further, the visitors have been encouraged to bring waste or dispose of it responsibly.

Location of Park

The Chitwan National Park is located in the south-central part of Nepal. It lies in the sub-tropical low areas of Chitwan, Makawanpur, Parsa, and Nawalparasi districts. The National Park is bordered by the Narayani River in the north and the Rapti River in the south.

The easy accessibility and proximity to other popular tourist destinations in Nepal, such as Lumbini and Pokhara, make the Park even more popular. Both local and foreign tourists can enjoy the unique ecosystem and rich biodiversity.

Area of Park

The total area of Chitwan National Park covers 952.63 sq. km (367.8 square miles), out of which almost 70% of the park area is covered by Sal forests. The rest of the area is covered by grasslands and riverine ecosystems.

Additionally, the National Park has a buffer zone with an area of 729.37 sq. km (281.6 square miles). These areas include a wide range of wildlife and vegetation, including rivers and small ponds. Also, several small indigenous villages are encompassed within the area.

How to get from Kathmandu to Chitwan?

Chitwan is about 5-6 hours of road distance (~169 km/105 miles) and 15 minutes of aerial distance from Chitwan National Park. There are four options to get from Kathmandu to Chitwan National Park.

    Fly to Bharatpur Airport

You can fly to Chitwan Airport from the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport. This is a 15-minute short flight and costs about $100 for foreigners. From the airport, you can take a private taxi to Saraha, which costs about $20.

    Drive in a private vehicle

You can hire a private car directly from Kathmandu to Sauraha, and a taxi can cost you about $70 to $90, depending upon your bargaining skills.

    Drive in a tourist bus

You can get a tourist bus/van from Thamel, the bus park, or Kalanki to Chitwan’s bus park. From there, the drive to Sauraha is about 45 minutes, and you can take a private taxi again.

The fare of a tourist bus is about $15 from Kathmandu to Chitwan. This bus usually leaves Kathmandu in the morning, and booking your trip in advance is recommended.

    Drive in a local bus

Many local buses or microbuses leave daily from Kathmandu to Chitwan. While these local buses are crowded and not as comfortable as tourist vans, you can find many local buses throughout the day.

The best place to find a local bus leaving for Chitwan is from Kalanki, and you don’t need to book in advance. The price for the local bus is $6 to $8, and from Chitwan bus park, you can take another local bus to Sauraha, which costs about $1. But again, the local buses are not so clean, crowded, and noisy.

Things to do in Chitwan National Park

    Elephant Rides

There are elephant-rearing units inside the Chitwan National Park, and one can ride on the back of an elephant at a certain charge. You will be accompanied by a local guide or Elephant masters who take care of your safety throughout the ride.

In about 30 minutes of the ride, the elephant takes you around the forest and along the river bank, where you can see many other animals bathing and enjoying the sun. You can stop for a few seconds to capture one of such beautiful pictures.

    Jeep Safari

On the outskirts of Chitwan National Park, we can hire a jeep for the rides. Option for private rides and group joining are available depending on the season and the time we go there.

In about 4 hours, we can dive deep into the thickest of forests to spot some of the rare wildlife in the woods. The naturalist guide will explain to you all the animals and unique flora you see along the ride.

    Canoe Safari

Now, this is an exciting activity, and we will be riding on a small wooden boat into Rapt River. You will have a boat driver to lead the boat as you see some Crocodiles basking in the sun. It’s, of course, a thrilling ride as you see crocodiles swimming alongside you. This is also a great time to spot some beautiful and unique birds.

    Tharu Cultural Tour and Dances

Tharu are the indigenous group of people who still live in the forest of Chitwan. Their nomadic lifestyle takes you back to the last century when you can observe humans living in harmony with nature.

Their way of life, tools, foods, and houses reflect the very old traditions of Nepal. Despite being close to Chitwan, the commercial capital of Nepal, they lead a very poor and basic lifestyle.

Also, Tharu foods and dances are getting very popular in Nepal. The young ladies shall perform their cultural dance, the Tharu dress, and obviously, you can join them to learn a few moves.

Elephant Breeding Centre and Museum visit

In the outer circle of Chitwan National Park, you get to visit a small museum with a display of animals inside the park. Some organs of rare animals, such as horns, skins, teeth, etc., are displayed along with the information card of all the animals.

Then, we will visit the breeding centre for elephants. The government has planned to increase the number of Asia elephants on this premises. For that, the adult Elephant is given assistance to mate and give birth while the younger children are given extensive care. You can see many elephant babies of different sizes and ages during the visit.

    Bird Watching

The Chitwan National Park trip is the best spot to watch some rare migratory birds. If possible, we will provide you with binoculars for a close-up view of the birds, and the naturalist guide will explain their origin to you.

    Sunset Viewing

The Sunset of the Terai area is very beautiful, especially when you observe it from the river shore. When you are tired from the numerous activities throughout the day, a beautiful sunset is the best possible way to end the Royal Chitwan National Park tour now.

How to get from Kathmandu to Chitwan

What is the possible extension to Chitwan Jungle Safari?

Chitwan NP almost lies in the centre of Nepal, and many other nearby areas are accessible from Chitwan. You can drive to Pokhara, the city of lakes and caves, with about 4-5 hours (148 km/92 miles) ride from Chitwan.

Or, you can get to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha about 6-7 hours (165 km/102.5 miles) from Chitwan. Within Chitwan, you can visit water parks, temples, the local market, Devghat, and also go rafting or Cruising in the Narayani River.

Best Season/Months to do Chitwan Jungle Safari

The best season to do Chitwan Jungle Safari is during the dry season. Typically, October to March is considered the dry season, as there is no rainfall and the skies are clear, giving you a long-range and clear view.

During these seasons, wild grasses are trimmed or dried, making it easier to navigate. You can see various animals grazing or resting in their natural habitat from far and wide during these months.

Likewise, touring Chitwan in April and May can be considered. The weather is warm, but you can still spot various wildlife during these months.

However, we recommend that you avoid going on jungle safaris during the rainy season (June-September). There is a risk of flooding in Rapti River, and the weather will be sunny.

    Permits for Chitwan National Park

You will need to obtain a Chitwan National Park Permit to visit the National Park. The permit costs NPR 2000 for foreigners, NPR 1000 for SAARC, and NPR 150 for Nepali citizens. The costs are subjected to per person per entry.

These permits can be purchased at the entrance gate or from the authorized personnel. Additionally, for other activities, such as elephant bath rides or cultural performances, the permits can be purchased through hotels, lodges, or local tour guides.

Note: You might also need a few special permits if you want to visit a few nearby spots and local villages.
