Where is Ngozumpa Glacier Located?

What Does Ngozumpa Mean?

Physical Characteristics of Ngozumpa Glacier

This 36 km glacier starts on the high slopes below Cho Oyu and nearby peaks, ending near Gokyo Valley at around 4,700 meters above sea level. The glacier descends from elevations approaching 8,000 meters, creating a vertical range of more than 3,000 meters.

Ngozumpa is a valley glacier, and much of its lower part is covered by a thick layer of rocks and debris. Because of this debris, the glacier’s surface looks more like a rocky valley than a river of ice, unlike clean-ice glaciers.

Beneath the boulders, gravel, and moraine, the glacier continues to flow slowly downhill under its own weight. The glacier’s width and ice thickness change along its length.

In some sections, the ice is several hundred meters thick, although the exact thickness depends on the terrain and how much debris covers the surface. Ice cliffs, meltwater ponds, crevasses, and moraine ridges are common features across the glacier.

Surface Features of Ngozumpa Glacier

Large lateral moraines run along both sides of the glacier. These ridges formed when the moving ice pushed and carried rocks from the nearby mountain slopes. Near the lower end of the glacier, these moraines act as natural barriers that affect how meltwater flows and help form lakes nearby.

The glacier also has many ice cliffs, where you can see walls of ice between the layers of rocks and debris. In warmer months, these cliffs melt faster than the surrounding areas and often help create supraglacial ponds, small lakes that form right on the glacier’s surface.

In the upper part of the glacier, deep cracks called crevasses form as the ice moves over rough ground. These cracks are harder to see in the lower part because thick debris covers most of the ice. Under the surface, meltwater travels through tunnels inside the glacier and comes out as streams near the end of the glacier.

The thickness of the ice changes across the glacier and can be around 400 meters (1,300 ft) deep in some places. The debris on top slows down melting in some areas, but the Ngozumpa Glacier still moves slowly under its own weight.

This slow movement keeps changing the glacier’s surface and carries rocks and sediment through the Gokyo Valley.

How to Reach Ngozumpa Glacier?
