Annapurna Circuit Trek | Monthly Guide

The Annapurna region presents itself with the most unique experiences throughout the year. Might it be the lush rhododendron forests of Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, the mysterious Upper Mustang Trek, or the untouched setting of Nar Phu Valley Trek, the Annapurna region has it all for you.

Each season is featured with distinct weather conditions, challenges on the trail, and cultural immersion. Clear skies, blooming rhododendrons, solitude, etc., what is that you are seeking? Understanding the Annapurna Circuit Trek map month-by-month is essential.

What to Expect in January and February?

January and February are the coldest months on the Annapurna Circuit route, with freezing temperatures, icy trails, and snowfall.

At lower altitudes like Dharapani and Tatopani, daytime temperatures range from 5-10°C, while higher altitude villages like Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi, and Muktinath can experience temperatures as low as -15°C to -20°C.

So, the trails can be icy and slippery, requiring crampons and proper winter Annapurna trek gear. Many teahouses at higher altitudes may be closed, so it’s essential to plan your accommodations carefully. Or, you can contact Himalayan Masters for booking accommodations.

If you are an experienced trekker, you can complete the trek with a well-planned itinerary and preparation for the challenges of winter trekking.

In contrast, a winter trek in Annapurna could be the best option for experienced trekkers looking for a challenging and quiet winter adventure.

March and April are Best for Flowers and Wildlife

Spring (March, April and May) is Annapurna Circuit best time, with warmer temperatures (10°C to 20°C at lower altitudes) and clear skies. The rhododendron forests come alive with vibrant blooms, adding to the beauty of the Annapurna region.

Trails are in good condition, though occasional rain showers are possible. The trail starts to get busier as the peak trekking season approaches, but it’s still less crowded than autumn.

This season also coincides with Holi, the festival of colours celebrated in March, offering trekkers a unique cultural experience.

May

It is the tail end of spring, with warmer temperatures (15°C to 25°C at lower altitudes) and clear skies. However, the pre-monsoon heat can make trekking at lower elevations uncomfortable.

Trails are generally dry, but occasional rain showers may be experienced. Crowds are moderate, as it’s the last month of the peak trekking season.

However, clear panoramic mountain vistas can be enjoyed during this month.

Further, festivals like Buddha Jayanti, which celebrate the birth of Buddha, are observed in May, adding cultural significance to your trek.

June, July and August are not ideal time

We do not suggest trekking during the monsoon season (June, July, and August). Trekking the Annapurna Circuit is challenging due to heavy rainfall, high humidity, and cloudy skies.

Likewise, temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C at lower altitudes, but the trails can be muddy, slippery, and prone to landslides. Leeches and mosquito bites are also common in the lower regions.

Very few trekkers prefer trekking during this time, making it a quiet but challenging trek.

Moreover, most of the Annapurna region falls in a rain shadow zone. A rain shadow is an area that receives little rainfall as the region is cut off from the rain system by a natural barrier. So, in this case, Annapurna massif serves as a natural barrier, causing less rainfall.

Furthermore, festivals like Janai Purnima and Gai Jatra (Newari festival) fall during these months. These festivals offer a glimpse into local culture.

Additionally, for those looking for solitude and lush green landscapes and who do not mind walking in the rain, monsoon could be Annapurna Circuit best time for trekking. Nevertheless, it is only for experienced trekkers.

September, October and November

Autumn (September to November) is another best time for the Annapurna Circuit Trek. It features stable weather, clear skies and stunning mountain views. Daytime is a little warmer, with temperatures ranging from 10-20°C (50-68°F) at lower elevations and -6°C to 5°C (21°F to 41°F) at higher elevations. Rainfall is minimal, ensuring dry trails.

This time of the year is best to witness the stunning mountain views and cultural experiences as there are stable trekking conditions.

Trails are dry and well-maintained around this time. However, there might be some snow on Thorong La Pass (5,416m / 17,769ft), which is usually snow-free, making it more accessible.

This is peak season, meaning busy trails and full teahouses. Advance bookings for accommodation are recommended.

Festivals During Autumn

Dashain (September/October) – Nepal’s biggest festival, celebrated with family gatherings and kite flying.

Tihar (October/November) – Festival of Lights, bringing colourful decorations, celebrations and feasts.

November and December

The weather in November and December is still favourable for trekking. Nights could be chilly, but the days are still walkable.

November is still a great time for trekking, with clear weather and daytime temperatures between 5°C and 15°C. By December, it becomes significantly cooler, particularly at high altitudes, with daytime temperatures ranging between 0°C and 10°C and night temperatures falling below freezing.

However, December trekking has its advantages, with fewer trekkers and a serene trekking experience. The clear skies offer great visibility for breathtaking views of the mountains covered in snow.

But there are obstacles to watch out for. The cold will require proper gear. Also, crossing Thorong La Pass might be a little challenging as the trail might be covered in ice and snow, making it challenging to traverse.

Similarly, the days are shorter, and the nights are longer. Shorter days mean shorter trekking time, so plan your trek days accordingly. Some Annapurna Circuit teahouses along the route will also close in the off-season.
