Where is Yala Glacier Located?
Yala Glacier sits in the upper Langtang Valley of Rasuwa District, Nepal, within Langtang National Park. Its approximate coordinates are 28.236°N and 85.617°E. It lies close to the Nepal-Tibet (China) border in the central Himalayas, forming part of the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region.

The Formation of Yala Glacier Began Thousands of Years Ago

On May 12, 2025, scientists, Buddhist monks, Indigenous community leaders, and local residents gathered in the Langtang Valley for a symbolic “ice funeral” to honor the glacier.

As part of the tribute, two granite memorial plaques inscribed in Nepali, English, and Tibetan were installed near the glacier, serving as a lasting reminder of its disappearance and the importance of protecting mountain environments.
Yala Glacier has also been added to the Global Glacier Casualty List, which recognizes glaciers that have disappeared or no longer behave as active glaciers. It is the only glacier in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region to be listed.
