What to Know About the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Monsoon

Ever thought what it feels like trekking one of the most emerging yet remote treks in Nepal during the off-season, that too in the monsoon? Yes, we are talking about the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Monsoon.

Spring and Autumn might be the best times for the Manaslu Circuit Trek, but some people might have different preferences. They might love the rain and greenery.

This article is for those considering trekking the Manaslu Circuit during the Monsoon.

Manaslu Circuit Trek in Monsoon Weather & Climate Details

The period of monsoon lies between June and August in Nepal. Wet winds are the cause of rainy weather, humid climate, and cloudy weather.

The afternoon and evening tend to be cloudier. During Monsoon in Manaslu Circuit, the clouds will hover the views and obstruct you from seeing it.

At lower levels, such as Machha Khola, Jagat, it is a warm and humid area, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C.

In the mid-hill areas like Deng, and Namrung, the weather drops to 15°C to 24°C. Above the villages such as Samagaon and Samdo, and the Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), the weather is colder. The temperatures remain between 5°C and 13°C during the day, and at night, they reach near freezing.

The rainfall at the trail is different due to local microclimates. Less forest areas experience high rainfall, which is continuous, and the place is green.

The parts of the circuit higher up are in a partial rain-shadow area and receive a little less precipitation. The fog, wind, and abrupt showers are still widespread on higher levels.

Trails are highly influenced by the weather of monsoons. When it is constantly raining, the paths will become muddy and slippery, particularly in thin, forest areas. Rivers and streams are higher in less time, and there is more risk of crossing.

The excessive waterfall causes landslides, particularly in the steep lower sections. It difficult to go on monsoon trekking due to damp weather, broken paths, and unreliable weather conditions.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Conditions in Monsoon

From June to August, the situation on the trail is not easy, particularly in the lower parts. Early trek routes and the drive paths are the most impacted because the road, river, and trek trails are also affected directly by the rain.

One of the most impacted is the Kathmandu-Soti Khola-Machha Khola drive. It continuously rains, and it destroys the rugged mountain roads, making them dirty and slippery.

Heavy rains trigger landslides and road blockages, resulting in long delays or even vehicle termination at Arughat or at the river level.

After the trek begins, the bottom part of the trek between Machha Khola and Deng is the most affected. These regions go across deep valleys, forests, and plains within the Budhi Gandaki River.

Trails are made muddy, slippery and unstable by heavy rain. Water in streams increases quickly, and little streams that are easily navigated during other seasons are dangerous. These wet forests also have many leeches.

Between Namrung, Samagaon and Samdo, the situations are a little better. The higher regions are partly under rain-shadow and, hence, receive less rainfall as compared to the lower valleys. The trails are mostly rocky and stable, with wet ground and fog being common.

Rainfall is not so intense between Samdo and Larkya La Pass, which are cold in nature with intense winds and sudden weather conditions.

When there are storms, it may seem that there is mud; however, due to the poor visibility, the snow or ice may be slogging after a storm.

Budget & Logistics in Monsoon season

A trek through Manaslu may be a little less expensive when it is in the rainy season due to a reduced number of people and less demand.

There is also the possibility of increased costs due to delays because of landslides or the blocking of roads.

Traveling from Kathmandu to Soti Khola or Machha Khola is frequently delayed by rain, which can increase drive times or require a diversion. It can still accommodate and feed, but there are fewer options in some villages due to a lack of trekkers.

It is always advisable to make reservations for permits, guides and accommodation in the monsoon so that they need not face any last-minute issues.

Elevated Conditions, Rivers and Landslide Danger

Trails in the lower circuit are of a muddy nature; slippery, narrow, and leeches are quite frequent in the wood. The crossing of a river is dangerous since water can then swiftly rise after it rains.

Landslides and falling rocks are severe, particularly on rugged valley pathways. Trekkers need to slow down and increase the time they spend on wet trails.

Safety and Health

The question several trekkers put across is whether it is safe to trek Manaslu during the monsoon. The solution lies in preparation.

Trekking is somewhat not that easy due to the dangers on the trails and the unpredictability of the weather. Good planning includes waterproof clothes, heavy-duty waterproof boots, walking poles and rain gear.

Larkya La Pass During Monsoon

Larkya La Pass is accessible at any time but during the monsoon it has powerful winds, fog, and occasional snow can complicate crossings.

Morning is the most appropriate time to try to pass, before the clouds and high wind accumulate. In case of bad weather, guides might propose shorter routes or return to Samagaon or Samdo, as it will be safer.

Due to dense clouds in the monsoon it will be difficult to naviagate and walk through the paths holding the trekking poles. But having a guide will help you cross the paths and descend down to Bimthang easily.

Nature and Monsoon Experience

Monsoons attract green, beautiful landscapes, cascading waterfalls, flowing glaciers, and newly formed lakes in the region. There is growth of plants and animals, flowering plants and moving animals.

It is also a season with more cultural immersion as it is usually the time when the villages are quiet, and locals go on with their daily life.
