Everest Climbing 2024- Updates, News, Records, and Deaths

Everest Climbing 2024- Updates, News, Records, and Deaths

Things are crazy at Everest right now. There’s a rush, there’s a record, there’s a thrill, and there’s a risk. There’s living, there’s winning, and there’s death. Let’s understand what’s happening among Everest climbers in 2024, right now.

Everest Climbing Permit issued for 2024

According to the new media, about 421 Everest climbing permits were issued for Everest Climb 2024. Among them, 345 are male and the other 76 are female, all belonging to a total of 45 groups. Almost 500 Nepalese climbers (Sherpa, Porters, and climbers) got the permits for Everest Climb 2024. So, we are hoping to see more than 900 people at the summit this year.

Note: This number is slightly lower than the 478 foreigners who got climbing permits to climb Everest in 2023. That’s good news because Everest has been very crowded lately, and the government has been trying to limit the number of trekkers in 2024 Everest.

How many people have climbed Everest in 2024?

As of May 21st, 2024, 268 people out of 900 had probably climbed Everest. The official report has yet to be released, so let’s wait to see how many of the 900 climbers who got the permit can reach the top of Everest and how many had to drop their Everest climbing in the middle.

The climbers can climb Everest 2024 from Everest climb 2024 dates from the 7th of April to the 31st of May 2024.

Rope fixing was completed on May 10th

Marking the beginning of the climbers’ season, a team of 10 successfully climbed the Everest Summit Expedition 2024 on May 10th. The team was led by Seven Summit Treks. You can see the details of these climbers Here.

Completion of Mountain Climbing Season

As per DoT, 1002 climbers took permits for various Mountains around
In Nepal, 792 of them are Male and 210 are female. Five mountaineers were dead and three are still missing.

Among 1002 permits, 421 were for Mount Everest alone. Accompanied by 421 foreign travellers, almost 500 other Sherpas got the permit. Although the final data is not released, it the claimed that a total of 600 climbers made it to the top of Everest in 2024.

2024 is the 74th year after Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa did the first-ever climb to Mount Everest. To honor the occasion, the Department of Tourism celebrated the 71st Everest Day on May 29th, awarding all record holders and recognizing the climbers of 2024.

Everest Climbing 2024 Records

1. Kami Rita Sherpa climbed for 30th time- Record War in Everest

Kami Rita Sherpa made a world record for the “highest number of climbs to Everest” on May 12th, successfully reaching the Everest summit for the 29th time. But the interesting thing is that Kami Rita Sherpa is so determined to keep his name on the record that he is unsatisfied with the 29th climb. This year, he is currently headed for the 30th climb, the 2nd in the same season as Mount Everest Climb 2024.

And if you are wondering how old he is, Kami Rita is 54 now.

Update: On May 22nd 2024, Kami Rita Sherpa reached the Everest summit for the 30th time, successfully completing the 30th ascent. This beat their own record to climb Everest for the 29th time, last week.

Who is kami Rita Sherpa?

Kami Rita Sherpa is a professional mountain guide with a World record for the “Most Successful Ascent of Mt. Everest by an Individual.’ . Kami Rita, a very enthusiastic mountain climber is a senior mountain guide at Seven Summit Treks. Kami’s father, a refugee from Tibet was also a mountaineer guide until 1992 when he suffered severe frostbite. After working as a porter for several years, Kami started his Everest journey in 1996. Then he just couldn’t stay away.

2. Dawa Finjok Sherpa- Fastest man to climb Everest

Dawa Finjok Sherpa is now a record holder for “fastest man to climb Everest 3 times”. Also, a guide for Seven Summit Treks Everest Expedition Dawa Finjok Sherpa climbed Mt. Everest Three times in the time frame of 8 days 13 hours & 35 minutes. This first climb was completed on May 12, 2024, his second ascent on May 17, 2024, and his third ascent on May 20, 2024.

4. Foreigners climb his 18th peak

Although we don’t know if it’s a world record, the Everest climb in 2024 is surely a big deal for British man Kenton Cool, who made Everest his 18th peak, 8000m+. Also, working as a mountaineering guide, Mr. Cool kept talking about Sherpas and their bravery once he was back.

4. Phunjo Lama- Fastest woman to climb Everest

A brave Nepal soul Phunjo Lama has set a record for the fastest woman to climb Mount Everest, making it from base camp to Everest top in just 14 hours and 31 minutes on Thursday. During this time, she climbed from base camp to the Everest summit and then came back all the way to base camp, alive and conquered. Born in a very remote village of Chhokangpaaro village of Tsum and struggling for a long time, Phunjo is now a famous name among mountain climbers. This record for males is held by Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa by climbed Everest in 18 hours and 20 minutes in 2003.

5. Purnima Shrestha- Highest climb for one season

Nepali Mountaineer Purnima Shrestha becomes the first woman ever to climb Everest 3 times in one season i.e. 14 days. No woman ever has been able to climb Everest 3 times in a single year.

Everest 2014 News and Death

Everest climb being featured on YouTube

Popular YouTuber Inoxtag’, with 7 million YouTube subscribers and 5 million Instagram followers, is heading to Everest at the age of 22. Ines Benazzouz has been preparing for this for one year, and we are waiting for an update from Everest.

“It is now time for me to embark on a new adventure, and I will only return after I’ve achieved my goal. There will be a break from posting videos and stories for a while.” He said before he was headed to Everest climb 2024.

Two Mongolians missing in Everest, one found

Two Mongolians—Tsedendamba Usukhjargal, 31, and Lkhagvajav Purevsuren, 53 were reported to be missing since May 13th, 2024. They were headed to the summit without Sherpa’s assistance and were missing above Camp IV. One week after the search, a team found one body at 8600 metres, still hooked well in the fixed ropes of Everest. It’s unclear how he died.

Another body was also spotted at 8,400 meters, a little far from the trail/ ropes. The team couldn’t verify if it was the Mongolian’s body or someone from the Everest 2023 climbing season. The images will soon be verified by experts.

2 more deaths after the ice section tumbled down- 23rd May

On May 23rd, two deaths were confirmed by the officials at base camp. Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui, 40 from Kenya and his assistant Nawang Sherpa, 44 were reported dead. Kirui was on the way to making it to the Everest summit with oxygen, the first one from Africa. Their body was found just below the summit, probably on their way down, right at the death zone.

Further, there was another incident near the base camp. Eyewitnesses have claimed that a very large line of human traffic was formed when climbers were stepping down, and when the ice rock fell, 6 of them were thrown pack. Luckily 4 were saved with ropes, but two others were not so lucky. Daniel Paul Peterson, 40, from the United Kingdom and Pas Tenji Sherpa,23, from Nepal are still missing. And their chances of survival is said to be slim.

How much is the permit fee for Everest Nepal?

As of 2024, the permit fee for Everest from the South site is $11000. Do note that this amount will not increase to $15000 in the autumn of 2025. Also, the $4000 security deposit can be claimed back when climbers take 8 kg of trash from the peak to the base camp.

PS: This permit fee is for the Main autumn season, March, April, and May. It’s low for the other seasons, as described in the image below.

The permit for Everest climbing for foreigners is $11000 for Autumn, $5500 for Spring, and $2750 for Winter (American dollars)

How much does it cost to climb Mount Everest 2024?

The total cost to climb Everest 2024 is generally $40000 to $60000. The Permit Fee of $11,000 and the Garbage Fee of $4000 (refundable) are fixed and paid to the government. Other costs can vary depending on group size, climbing agency, facilities, and you get a lot of other things. Even for the lowest quality service, you spend about $35000 in total.

Supreme Court passing new rules for Everest Climb 2024

In May of 2024, the Supreme Court of Nepal filed some new regulations regarding the Everest climb 2024 as a verdict for the petition filed against Attorney Deepak Bikram Mishra in the year 2019. While most of these rules existed on paper, none were applicable in real life. Let’s discuss each one of them.

Limit the number of climbing permits

The Supreme Court orders the government to issue a fixed number of climbing permits each year. The number is to be determined after the capacity to safely accommodate the climbers on Everest is analyzed.

Implementation? Since the Supreme Court has also not justified a fixed number this time, it’s likely to be unimplemented for a few more years. China has claimed to cap climbers at a maximum of 300 each season, but Everest South Col is giving almost 950 permits this year.

Other Supreme Court mandate rules

Another set of rules from the Supreme Court to be implemented by Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality has been issued. This local body is fully responsible for all Everest Base Camp (EBC) management and must Implement the following rules.

  • Only square (box) and dome tents are allowed in the base camp. Big, irregular-shaped tents with attached toilets will not be allowed in 2024.
  • Any commercial business lunch, such as in massage, bakeries, gear stores or more, is not allowed.
  • Only people with climbing permits are allowed to sleep at EBC, and visitors/ trekkers are not allowed to sleep here.
  • The climbers are required to use WAG bags and bring back their faeces off of the peak.
  • Each climber should bring back eight kilograms of waste from the higher camps to get back their security deposit.
  • Everest aspirants should be required to use a tracking chip. The chip named RECCO (detail post), which is used to detect lost people in ski resorts, will be used in Everest. However, its efficiency is still in question.
  • Helicopters cannot carry gear to EBC or land randomly in any other camps without permission.
