To reach the Monastery involves trekking across rugged landscapes, suspension bridges, and villages. As Serang Gompa stands at an altitude of around 3,100 meters above sea level, some show symptoms of altitude sickness.

The trek requires good physique, endurance, and experience related to trekking in the Himalayas. Manaslu for beginners may also try it, but proper acclimatization, pace, and preparation are needed.

Best Months for Trekking to Serang Gompa

The best time to visit Manaslu Serang Gompa is from Spring to March, May and Autumn to September and November. These months offer clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and breathtaking mountain views.

In spring, it’s the time of colourful rhododendron blooms, while in autumn, it offers crystal clear weather with crisp air and perfect views.

    • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit: If the trekking route extends to the Annapurna Conservation Area.

All these permits should be obtained with the help of a registered trekking agency since solo trekking is not available in this region.

Accommodation and Food in Serang Gompa Trek

Basic accommodation is available along the Manaslu Circuit trek. You can find basic to some standard teahouses on the actual Manaslu Circuit that provide normal bedding, blankets, and pillows.

But once you reach Serang Monastery for the stay, you either have to stay at the Monastery itself or in your own carried tent.

Basic local guesthouses or monastery rooms can also accommodate guests at the Monastery itself. However, the facilities are very basic, so the trekker should be prepared for minimal comfort.

The food involves the traditional Nepali diet; Dal Bhat, rice, lentils, vegetables, noodles, Tibetan bread, momos, and tea are available at the teahouses and lodges.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek and Serang Monastery Trek are mostly similar treks. But adding the Serang Gompa visit and stay will add three more days to your normal Manaslu Circuit Trek Itinerary.

The normal Manaslu Circuit Trek will take 13 days with Himalayan Masters, but the Serang Gompa added will make it 16-day trek.

The altitude gains in Serang Gompa stay in Manaslu are somehow the same as those of the Manaslu Circuit Trek since the Gompa altitude is 3100 meters. During the Manaslu Circuit Trek, you will also come across such heights.

The ending point and the highest point on the Manaslu Circuit Trek are the same: Tilje and Larkya La Pass, respectively.

The major difference between the normal Manaslu Circuit Trek and the Serang Gompa Trek is its cultural and traditional significance.

The Serang Gompa has really great Buddhist significance during the trek. Many big Gurus and Rinpoche gather at the Serang Gompa and follow the rituals daily.

However, in the normal Manaslu Circuit Trek, you can see some of the cultural findings and engage in the normal talks, but they miss this part of being present at the rituals every day.

    Reviews

My trekking accomplice and I reviewed many trekking companies before we identified Himalayan Masters as reasonably priced and flexible with itineraries. We are both old guys whose wives allowed us this far-off adventure, yet we hoped to complete the Manaslu Circuit with five or six aggressive side trips.

Having landed in Kathmandu after a 24-hour double flight from California, we were pleased to have Sandip meet us at the airport and transport us to our hotel through the chaotic local traffic. The hotel was great! The next day, we were briefed on the trek. We were pleased with Sandip’s straightforward demeanour and willingness to allow changes to the itinerary midstream, depending on our hiking abilities, whims, and other factors. We would eventually scuttle one side trip due to cloudiness and another to stay at the Serang Monastery.

Sandip’s choices of guide, Raj Acharya, and porter, Deepak Adhikari, were equally superb. Raj looked out for us, skirting trail landslides, monitoring our vitals after big climbs, and reserving us good rooms in the guest houses; plus, he made sure we were fed on time. On the other hand, Deepak helped us with our respective loads, carrying a load (with some of our stuff) that seemed more than heavy. But for Deepak, we might not have made it over Larke Pass. Both Raj and Deepak were cheerful and exceedingly helpful.

When one flies across the world for an epic adventure, it’s always a plus when logistics work out, and the experience is positive. This was EPIC. If we were to trek in Nepal again, we would return to Himalayan Masters.

I could not have asked for anything more from Himalayan Masters. My initial contact with Sandip was great. He was responsive to all my questions, informative and accommodative. He took care of everything, including airport pick up and drop off, map, shirt, hat and a thorough route briefing. When we needed to change our itinerary part way through the trek, no problem.

Our guide, Raj Acharya, and porter, Deepak Adhikara, were both great. Raj is very knowledgeable about the Manaslu trek and bent over backwards to make sure we were well taken care of. Deepak, carrying a heavy load, was bent over forwards but never complained. Both were always friendly and kind.

Our trip was fantastic! We not only completed the trek over the pass but we also managed to get in side trips to the Serang Monastery, Pungen Gompa, Manaslu Base Camp and Rui La Pass (Tibet border). All were pretty tough hikes but so worth the effort.

To me, it’s obvious that Himalayan Masters has the knowledge and experience to get all the little details right. I called this the trip of a lifetime, but my wife reminded me about our honeymoon, so this was it.
